The 2020 release date of the iPhone 12 is months away. We expect the launch to happen in September. Hopefully, Apple will use the same naming scheme used for the 2019 iPhone lineup. If that happens, we should expect the iPhones to be called the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro.
Apple plans to feature significant updates in the 2020 updates. And bringing in some new design changes. Like what we saw in the iPhone X. We expect four iPhones in different display sizes, which could be 5.4, 6.7, and 6.1 inches (x2).
While we wait for iPhone 12 release date 2020, some rumors are already out there about the phones. Some say the 6.7-inch iPhone and one 6.1-inch model will be higher-end OLED devices with triple-lens cameras. However, the 5.4 and 6.1-inch models will be lower-end iPhones with dual-lens cameras. If that’s true, we should expect a more affordable price tag from the 5.4 and 6.1-inch models.
Despite the price, all iPhones in 2020 expect to feature OLED displays and a 120Hz “ProMotion” refresh rate (hope its included).
Also, if the rumor about 5.4 inches is true, then Apple will make history. That means the 2020 iPhone 12 would be the smallest iPhone Apple has released since the 4.7-inch iPhone 8. Meanwhile, at 6.7 inches, the 2020 iPhone 12 Pro would be Apple’s largest iPhone to date.
The iPhone 12 might bring a new TrueDepth camera system that cuts down on the size of the notch on the front. There are rumors about a feature that could improve both photography and AR capabilities. That is a 3D triple-lens rear camera system that makes use of a laser to get the depth information for objects around. Probably like the LiDAR Scanner in the 2020 iPad Pro.
Prospective Name For The iPhone 12 In 2020
Ever since the iPhone 8, Apple’s iPhone naming plans have become more complicated. Like releasing the iPhone X and skipping the iPhone 9, which surprised everyone. But that didn’t stop them. They continued with the new naming scheme in 2018 with the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR. But things became more transparent in 2019 with the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max.
In the past, Apple did a numerical increase and then an “S” year. Because the changes expected in 2020 are likely to happen, it’s unlikely that Apple will release an iPhone 11s or similar. However, we’re likely going to see an iPhone 12.
If Apple follows the naming scheme used in the iPhone 11, then we expect the next iPhone to be called the iPhone 12. If that happens, then the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max would be the two higher-end devices expected.
Note: While we wait for the iPhone 12 release date 2020 there’s no confirmation that these new devices will be called the iPhone 12, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max. Until the new devices are released, but the guess is fun.
Design Of The iPhone 12
The iPhone will feature an overhauled design with a metal frame like the frame of the iPhone 4. Ming-Chi (Apple Analyst) said the new iPhone would use a more complex segmentation design. Including a new trenching and injection molding procedures.
The overall design will look like the design used in the iPhone 4 or iPad Pro. That is a square-edged stainless steel frame between two pieces of glass, replacing the current rounded stainless steel frame.
It will still use the glass for the front and back of the device.
The grooving and injection shaping of the metal in the frame is also present for a good reason. It’s there to reduce the negative impact of metal shielding on the high-frequency transmission efficiency of the internal antenna. Kuo trust that Apple will use tempered glass to protect the grooves in the frame.
A report from Bloomberg suggested that at least two of the high-end iPhones will have the new design. Replacing the curved edges will be the flat stainless steel edges. Similar to the design of the iPad pro.
According to Mac Otakar, the 6.7-inch iPhone will be slightly thinner than the 8.1mm thick iPhone 11 Pro Max with a thickness of 7.4mm. Also, it might be a bit taller than the 11 Pro Max. The 5.4-inch iPhone is between the height of the iPhone SE and the iPhone 8.
According to some leaked schematics that allegedly disclose Apple’s plans for the device shows some other design tweaks.
Narrowly larger camera lenses
Broader antenna lines at the side for 5G
Sim Port migrated to the left side of the device
Smart connector- like input on the right
One less speaker opening on right side of the speaker grille
Slightly lower power button
Display Of The iPhone 12
We all expect Apple to continue offering both higher-end iPhones and lower-end iPhones in 2020. Their devices might come equipped with OLED displays 2020. That would be awesome, with Apple doing away with LCDs for its iPhone lineup.
With the OLED across the iPhone lineup, this will allow “more flexible handset design.” Apple has been testing OLED displays from the Chinese company BOE Display. The company makes LCDs for Apple’s iPads and MacBooks. But Apple is still expected to continue with the Samsung OLED displays, which they used in recent OLED iPhones.
Hopefully, the new iPhones coming in 2020 will use a Samsung technology called Y-OCTA. It allows the OLED panel to have the touchscreen circuitry directly patterned on it without requiring a separate layer. However, it results in a thinner display and lower production costs, but it’s not sure if this translates to slimmer body design.
It won’t be a bad idea if upcoming iPhones adopt the Apple Watch’s low-power LTPO display technology. LTPO (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) holds an Oxide TFT structure that uses up to 15% less power than LTPS (Low-Temperature Polysilicon). As of today, Apple uses this backplane technology. While we wait for the release date of the iPhone 12 in 2020 we’re not sure if Apple will use this technology for the iPhone 12 or any upcoming iPhone.
Some rumors say some of the iPhones coming in 2020 are going to include touch-integrated displays supplied by LG. Also, LG plans to switch back to LTPO backplane technology towards the half of 2020. Maybe providing more power-efficient displays for some 2020 iPhones if the displays are all set eventually.
ProMotion Technology In The iPhone 12
Some rumors say Apple is thinking of a 120Hz ProMotion display for the higher-end iPhone Pro models. A ProMotion iPhone could work like the ProMotion iPad Pro. It continually adjusts the display to the movement of the content on the screen for fluid scrolling. It gives more excellent responsiveness and more consistent flow.
The iPad Pro’s display refresh rate modifies according to what is showing to save battery. For instance, if you see a movie or playing a game, the refresh rate may be at 120Hz. But if you’re viewing a picture or reading a web page, the frame rate reduces automatically.
Any iPhone with a 120Hz refresh rate could work the same way.
An enhanced refresh rate may bring more flexibility and realism to the displayed content improving the OLED displays of the iPhone.
Well, we’re not sure if ProMotion technology will be on the iPhone because it might have a lot of an effect on battery life. For instance, a recent rumor said we shouldn’t expect the LTPO in iPhone until 2021. That could prevent ProMotion displays from being included in the 2020 iPhone plan.
Other rumors said Apple wouldn’t bother adding ProMotion technology to the iPhone’s display if it doesn’t meet up with Apple’s standards.
iPhone 12 Release Date 2020
We might get some of the new iPhones released “multiple weeks later than normal.” Although Apple hasn’t released any information to suppliers about delays, engineers are assumed to fly to China to finalize product designs in May.
In February, Apple quit flying engineers to China for Engineering Validation Testing (EVT stage) of the iPhone 12 development. However, it could hold production on the new 2020 iPhones and is presently conducting all of these meetings over video calls.
Many analysts believe that iPhone 12 models with ultra-fast mmWave 5G support will get released after models with the more widespread sub-6HGz models, which are still 5G. Still, they are unable to benefit from the fastest 5G speeds.
Due to changes to the antenna package made in April, the mmWave 5G iPhones could see a delay production and in qualification process services. But we hope to get the iPhone 12 Release Date soon in 2020
iPhone 12 A14 Chip
Some rumors say TSMC will make the 5-nanometer chips Apple will use in its 2020 iPhone. TSMC has started manufacturing its 5-nanometer A14 chips designed for the iPhone starting in April.
According to Bloomberg, the A14 chip aim is to speed up artificial intelligence and AR tasks.
RAM Of The iPhone 12
Barclays analyst Blayne Curtis trust that the iPhone 12 Pro models will have 6GB RAM, while the iPhone 12 will feature 4GB RAM.
Also, we might get four iPhones featuring a varying amount of RAM.
That is a 6.7-inch iPhone with 6GB RAM, a 6.1-inch iPhone with 6GB RAM, a 6.1-inch iPhone with 4GB RAM, and a 5.4-inch iPhone with 4GB RAM.
BatteryOf The iPhone 12
As Apple suppliers are working on a new battery protection module, we could get a better battery capacity in the 2020 iPhone. This battery protection module is 50 percent smaller and thinner than the same component in other iPhones
The iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max have triple-lens cameras for the first time in any Apple iPhone. We hope Apple will continue with that for the 2020 versions of the Pro iPhones. We expect the new iPhone 12 with an added a new lens (a LiDAR time-of-flight sensor).
Fast company spoke to an informant that confirmed a “world-facing” 3D camera on the back of the iPhone 12. We are going to see the feature. Especially 9to5Mac spotting the code in iOS 14, that confirmed the existence of a time-of-flight sensor on the iPhone 12 Pro models. Also, the iPad Pro 2020 released earlier this year features a LiDAR scanner, signaling Apple’s plans for the iPhone 12.
When shooting, expect the sensor to be more accurate when judging the distance between your phone and the object. With that, portrait shots will be better. Also, allowing more precise object tracking and effects in those AR apps, Apple love so much.
Apple is also developing a periscope-like telephoto lens, which should give more extended range when zooming. Apple is trying to fit five-lens and three-lens arrays into a tinier space by using a prism to reflect light.
The iPhone 12 is also going to use a “sensor-shift,” a new kind of image stabilization technology, on its cameras. It works by detecting the movement of your phone, then moving the camera sensors in the reverse direction using small actuators. It will Keep your picture steady.
The technology is distinctive, unlike the universal optical image stabilization (OIS) in the cameras of smartphones today. Their lens moves rather than the sensor. Hopefully, for Apple, it will be more effective at making quality shots even in unsteady hands.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that the camera array in this fall’s iPhone 12 lineup could feature a 7-part (7P) plastic element. That’s an upgrade from the 6P element lenses used in current iPhones. Such an improvement would help with magnification on zoom lenses; it could also better handle distortions in images.
Ming-Chi Kuo reports that the camera array in this fall’s iPhone 12 lineup could get an upgrade. That is the 7-part (7P) plastic element, an upgrade from the current iPhones’ 6P element lenses.
November last year, sony stared creating awareness for its upcoming flagship IMX686 image sensor, which could make it into the iPhone 12. The sensor captures 64 megapixels and can deliver optimized 16-megapixel shots with enhanced light sensitivity, thanks to Quad Bayer pixel-binning
Storage Space Of The iPhone 12
Jon Posser (Youtuber) said Apple would start its storage space for the iPhone 12 from 128GB for the higher-end model. Then the lower-end iPhone 12 models will start at 64GB of storage.
Will The iPhone 12 have Touch ID?
Economic Daily News (Taiwanese site) reported we would get at least one iPhone 12 with an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. If that happens, then it is going to be manufactured by Qualcomm.
There are rumors about the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, but most of them are about Apple is targeting the technology 2021. In 2019 Qualcomm unveiled a 30x20mm in-display fingerprint sensor for phones Apple could exploit.
So many people think it might happen like Barclays analysts. They said Apple could use acoustic fingerprint technology for the 2020 iPhone models. Also, Global Times reported, Apple could release a notch-less phone with an under-display fingerprint sensor intended for the Chinese market.
Kuo believes Apple is manufacturing an iPhone with Face ID and an in-display fingerprint sensor for launch in 2021 rather than 2020. A report from Bloomberg also says that.
5G Connectivity In The iPhone
This year Apple plans to go back to Qualcomm modem chips instead of Intel chips, using Qualcomm’s 5G technology in iPhones. Qualcomm and Apple were previously engaged in a severe legal battle but managed to settle their disagreements in April of 2019.
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo assures that all hones coming in 2020 will use 5G technology. Also, all four iPhones will feature Qualcomm’s X55 5G modem chip.
The X55 chip provides a peak download speed of 7Gb/s and 3Gb/s upload speeds. Although these numbers are theoretical maximums and actual speeds will depend on the network provider. The 5G chip is Qualcomm’s first chip that carries all primary frequency bands, operation modes, and network deployments.
When talking about 5G networks, there are two types involved, which are mmWave (quicker and limited in range) and sub-6GHz (slower but broader spread). Also, there might be differences in which countries support which specifications.
mmWave 5G technology might be limited to big cities and urban areas because of its short-range. And 5G networks in the countryside and suburban areas will use the slower sub-6GHz technology.
Apple could supply iPhone models with mmWave and sub-6GHz to main markets like the U.S., U.K., Canada, Japan, and Australia. But in other countries, Apple may perhaps offer iPhones with just sub-6GHz connectivity. States that do not provide 5G technology may not get the sub-6GHz connectivity.
5G technology is still rising, but once Apple releases its new iPhones, significant carriers in the U.S. will have laid the foundation in most areas
Apple and Qualcomm are collaborating to get Qualcomm’s 5G technology into an iPhone immediately.
Price Of The iPhone 12
We might get the cost of the iPhone 12 from $649 to $1,099.
