How to use iCloud Photo Library On Your iPhone

Thank God for the iCloud photo library. We can take up to five, ten, or 100 pictures without straining our iPhone. Due to the visual era, we live in, flooding our iPhone with pictures is possible. No matter how much space that comes with your iPhone, you’re going to run! 

That’s why I’ve written this article to help you understand everything about the iCloud Photo Library. I’ll cover how to sync and upload images, download and delete them, and troubleshoot the problems you may encounter.

What is the iCloud Photo Library (iCloud Photo)?

The iCloud Photo Library is an essential component of every iCloud account. Anyone with an iOS device can access it. When activated, it automatically syncs all photos, screenshots, and videos you save with your iPhone straight to iCloud.  

With the iCloud Photo Library, you can upload media from your macOS, tvOS, and even Windows devices for centralized photo storage. Also, it was rebranded as iCloud Photos in iOS 12, but its essence continues as before.

Syncing Your photos to iCloud Photo Library

Before you sync your whole photo library to iCloud, make sure there are no unwanted pictures like similar pictures or old screenshots. iCloud only provides 5GB of free storage, so you need to be smart about consuming it. In case you need help in locating photos you don’t need, there’s an app for that. An iPhone app like Gemini Photos can help you solve that problem. It will help you find and delete all the unwanted photos whereby making sure only the good shots make it to the cloud.

Using The iCloud Photo Library on your iPhone

First, let’s set up the iCloud Photo Library on your iOS device. Follow these steps to do that.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap your name at the top
  3. Next, go to iCloud
  4. Below the iCloud storage indicator, you’ll see an app listing showing the number of apps using iCloud
  5. Select Photos (it should be the top option)
  6. Toggle iCloud Photo Library on (iCloud Photos in iOS 12)

How to access your iCloud photos From Your iPhone

You can use any device to sync your Photos to the iCloud, and you will still find them in your Photos app on your iPhone. Also, the Photos you’re going to be seeing will be in lower-resolution previews. The originals automatically moved to iCloud to save storage. But if you want to see the images the iCloud, you can access them on iCloud.com. Follow the steps below: 

  1. First, log into your iCloud using your Apple ID and password
  2. Next, you’ll see a range of apps. Click on to Photos.
  3. It may require some time to load your photo library, but once it loads, everything you see will be like the photos on your iPhone. If you make any changes like delete or edit a picture on the iCloud, the changes will appear on all other connected devices to this iCloud Photo Library.

How To Upload Photos Your The Cloud

Uploading your pictures or videos is very easy with your iOS or macOS. Giving the iCloud sync is turned on; it happens automatically.

If you use a Windows device and want to do this, log in to iCloud.com, you’ll see an upload button (a cloud with an arrow pointing up). Use it to upload pictures from another device to iCloud.

How To Download Your Photos From iCloud To Your iPhone

Before downloading your photos from iCloud, be sure that the iPhone you’re using has the right account enabled and logged in. After that, do the following:

  1. Open Settings > Your name > iCloud > Photos, just like the way you did when setting up your iCloud Photo Library
  2. Lastly, select the setting Download and Keep Originals

And that’s it! Now your photos will start downloading to your iPhone in full resolution.

How To Delete Your Photos From iPhone, But Not iCloud

If you want to delete some pictures from your iPhone but still want to keep them, there are two ways to do this: 

  1. First, log out of the iPhone you’re using to delete the pictures. Then you’ll need to log in again when you want to resume syncing data and photos to iCloud.
  2. You need to switch off the iCloud Library in the Settings (I’ve explained how to do that below) and then delete whatever you want to remove from your iPhone.

Note: Remember, once you log into your iCloud or switch it back on, your Library will automatically sync, and then the photos will reappear on your device.

How to turn off iCloud Photo Library

You can turn off the automatic syncing any time you want. Follow the steps to do that:

  1. Open settings 
  2. Then tap your name at the top of the list
  3. Next, go to iCloud
  4. Below the iCloud storage indicator, you’ll see an app listing showing the number of apps using iCloud
  5. Select Photos (it should be the top option)
  6. Turn off iCloud Photo Library (iCloud Photos), and turn off any sharing and syncing settings you’ve enabled

Troubleshooting The iCloud Photo Library

iCloud Photo Library is an essential part of any Apple product. However, you might come across some problems with it. Below you’ll find the most common questions iPhone users have concerning the iCloud Photo Library and helpful troubleshooting tips.

How Long Does It Take To Upload Pictures To iCloud?

It all depends on the size of your Library and the speed of your internet. Photos and videos will automatically upload when your device syncs to iCloud, usually when connected to a power source and WiFi. If it takes too long, try leaving your phone connected overnight to get the job done. If nothing happens, make sure you the iCloud Photo Library is turned on in your iPhone.

Why Can’t My Photos Upload To The Cloud?

If you’re having problems uploading your pictures to the cloud, it’s worth checking the following:

  • Is your iPhone using the latest version of iOS?
  • Is there enough iCloud storage? You can buy more if necessary, or use an app like Gemini Photos to get rid of unwanted duplicate photos and free up some space
  • Is your WiFi working, and was it turned on when your iPhone was charging?
  • Have you deleted an image you’re planning to sync? If this is your problem, check your photo album. If you can’t, find it check the Recently Deleted folder, where you can find the pics you trashed within the last 30 days—Tap Restore, and when next your phone syncs, it should upload that image too.

Why are my photos not loading on iPhone?

One thing you might not expect when syncing photos to iCloud is that you have the Optimize Storage feature turned on. This means that the high-quality versions of your pictures will be uploaded to iCloud, while the low-resolution previews will be visible on your iPhone. So if your Internet connection is terrible, the previews don’t load properly on your iPhone. To turn off Optimize Storage and keep the originals on your device, follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad
  2. Tap your name at the top
  3. Next, go to iCloud
  4. Below the iCloud storage indicator, you’ll see an app listing showing the number of apps using iCloud
  5. Select Photos
  6. Turn off Optimize Storage
